“And he (Jesus) said unto them, Come ye yourselves
apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” (Mark 6:31).
Since the work of repairing and invigorating the body occurs during the resting hours, it is essential that sleep should be regular and of a sufficient amount.
In this day and age, there are those who have a tendency to accomplish so much work in a given time, and then continue to labor when better judgment tells them they should rest. These persons lose more than they ever gain. They are merely living on borrowed capital. They are actually spending their vital forces or power which they need at some future time. Then, when the energy which they have so recklessly used is demanded, they fail for a lack of that energy. Their time of special energy need has come, but like the nation that has exhausted its energy resources, their physical resources are also exhausted. Remember that everyone who violates the laws of health loses, or suffers to a greater or lesser degree.
Generally speaking, all nature uses the night hours for resting and sleeping. God has given all nature, as well as men and women, the night hours for quiet rest and sleep in order to repair and invigorate the system. It would be a great blessing in health if we would develop the habit of retiring at a decent hour and then arising with the freshness of the early morning sun.
The person who follows the old adage of “Early to bed, and early to rise…”, would definitely improve in health, in spirits, in memory and in disposition. Do not try to crowd into one day, the work of two.
